- Racine Dream Team Makeover 2008 Results -

In 2005, when the Dream Team makeover project was initiated, Dr. Kind envisioned a fun, exciting makeover contest for which the community could really get excited about. Everyone knows about the "Extreme Makeover" show on TV and most of us have wondered how fantastic that would be if it was happening to us! It was her desire to get the word out to the community that the services being given to the people on the TV show could be found right here in Racine.

Dr. Kind presented her idea to Beth Allison of InnaVision Global Marketing and Mark Eickhorst of Reach Your Mark Promotions who are both very committed to seeing the Racine area thrive. They thought it was a great idea and, thus, the Racine Dream Team Makeover, Inc. was born.

The '2008 Racine Dream Team Makeover - Frest Start' was initiated to offer assistance to a victim of domestic abuse. Our hope was to help the winner begin to heal their emotional wounds and also raise self-esteem by improving their physical health and appearance. Our winner for 2008 is Patricia Robbins, a 49 year old Racine resident, who is ready for the challenge of the makeover process. Patricia will be receiving services from our Dream Team Sponsors throughout the makeover which will end in a celebration dinner at the Charcoal Grill and Rotisserie in early September. Updates will be posted as the makeover progresses so that you can watch the transformation occur!! (Thank you to Image Management LLC for continuing support of this website)

Here are the updates from our providers and our sponsors:

Kind Dentistry
June 2008 - Since Patricia has been unable to maintain regular dental care over the past several years, she was very excited about the dental portion of the makeover. She was aware that there were some serious problems, but was not in a position to pursue treatment. We began her dental makeover with a comprehensive dental examination and complete set of x-rays. A treatment plan was developed to solve some dental health issues as well as some cosmetic concerns. Her initial therapy included some advanced periodontal services and some oral surgery. She also received several tooth-colored fillings and we are soon beginning her porcelain crown restorations on her upper front teeth. She is also receiving professional teeth whitening for her lower front teeth. Patricia is already experiencing some of the positive results of improved dental health and is looking forward to having a smile that she can be proud of!!

August 5th - Patricia has had multiple dental appointments over the past month or so. Just recently we took the final impressions for her porcelain crowns for her front teeth. Her overall dental health is already significantly improved and she is looking great. The Racine Dream Team Makeover is not able to completely reverse the emotional damages that may have been caused by the domestic abuse situation, but a major factor in recovery is self-esteem. These women frequently stay in their situation because they simply do not believe that they deserve anything better. Their self-esteem can be extremely low with no hope of improvement. With this makeover, one of our goals is to help Patty begin to realize that she is a beautiful person and has value as an individual. Our life coach, Pamela Grant, is working with the emotional aspect while the rest of us are working on the external. Patty has been self conscious about her smile for many years and she knew she had a very un-healthy situation in her mouth. When she first saw her temporary crowns on her front teeth, she was deeply moved by the dramatic change. She is already starting to smile more frequently and with confidence!!

Patty received a comprehensive dental evaluation and a full restorative treatment plan which included non-surgical gum treatment, dental extractions, tooth-colored fillings, cosmetic enamel contouring, whitening, and cosmetic porcelain crowns. We saw a transformation from a very un-healthy mouth to a healthy and beautiful smile. The most rewarding aspect for us, though, has been observing the incredible changes in Patty’s spirit – she went from a tearful, angry woman and blossomed into someone who is bubbling over with joy. We are very thankful to have been a part of this amazing journey!

*** Kind Dentistry would like to extend a very special thank you to Popp Dental Laboratory for donating all of the dental labwork for the Racine Dream Team Makeover.

Razor Sharp Fitness
June 2008 - Patricia has made a personal commitment to improve her overall health and wellness. She is ready to make the lifestyle changes needed for improved health and quality of life, for her and her daughter. After completing a self-evaluation, Patricia has found that she is a bit “metabolically challenged”, so our focus is to eat and manage life’s stressors through healthy eating and physical activity, to help correct her metabolism. I began with simple measurements including weight, body fat percent, and waist and hip circumference. We then discussed eating habits, exercise, risk factors, including tobacco and alcohol use, current medications and supplementation, heart health, dieting history and health care utilization. The majority of our first visit was discussing the basics of nutrition and weight management.

July 2008 - From Suzanne, the club's Wellness Consultant and Registered Nurse - I had the absolute pleasure of meeting with Patricia on June 24th and July 1st and wanted to bring you up to date. Her starting stats are as follows:
   Weight = 190.6 lbs.
   Body Fat % = 28.1
   Waist = 34 in.
   Hips = 45 in
   Attitude = 150%

Our second meeting on July 1st was focused on doing a detox diet to “jump start” her metabolism and cleanse her body from toxins. We set some short and long term goals based on learning needs, and will meet on a weekly basis.

July 8th - Patricia has completed all but one day of her detox diet, which basically included fresh, raw fruits and vegetables, lemon water, herbal tea, and lean protein. The best part is that she didn't feel "deprived", and she reports the following health changes: decreased heartburn, bloating and cravings. She has less body "soreness" and as a result has less ibuprofen use. Another great thing to report is that her daughter is eating better. Patricia is reading labels and scrutinizing what she puts in her mouth.

I enjoy our weekly meetings, and am very proud of Patricia!

July 24th - Patricia checks in today at 4 weeks from starting her new journey toward optimal health and wellness. She has lost 2.5 pounds, 1 inch off her waist and ½ inch off her hips. Her change in body fat percent is -1.4%!! She remains in “moderately overweight”, but is definitely moving toward “good”, and lowering her risk factors for chronic complications. She verbalizes more energy and somewhat “ease” of eating better. She will continue to follow the Transitions Lifestyle System, a system for life., one that focuses on eating more low GI foods, behavior modification, and changing body composition.

August 5th - Patricia and I met this morning and the first thing that I noticed was that her face looked healthier. It had a clean, smooth and toned look to it. She verbalizes that she also feels that her body is changing in a positive way. Her clothes fit looser, and she doesn’t feel bloated. She reports she is sleeping better and wakes with energy. She really attributes all this to healthy eating and exercising. Her kitchen cupboards have more space as she is buying more fresh produce which, she admits, costs less than when she used to buy more packaged and prepared foods, so she is actually saving money at the store. Patricia is truly making lifestyle changes. Great work!

From Suzanne Williamson Registered Nurse, and Wellness Consultant at Razor Sharp Fitness: Patricia progressed through the Transitions Lifestyle System with ease and success, a perfect student, very coachable! The Transitions Lifestyle System is a holistic weight management system that focuses on three areas; eating low glycemic index foods to control blood sugar levels and corresponding insulin levels, behavior improvement or modification including weekly support, positive affirmation and stress reduction exercises, and third, changing body composition to support healthy metabolism and burning of calories for energy. Patricia is aware that “muscle dictates metabolism”, her new mantra!

In the 8 weeks that Patricia really changed her eating and exercise, she lost 8.5 pounds, 3.9% body fat, 2 inches off her waist and 1.5 inches off her hips. She went from “moderately overweight” classification to “good”, and this is significant for the prevention of chronic disorders like diabetes.

Patricia states her biggest accomplishment is that she is eating healthier to support normal growth and development and aging. She eats more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and stays clear of unhealthy fats and high fructose corn syrup and sugars. She has more energy, improved sleep and elimination, clearer and brighter skin, and a general feeling of well being.

Patricia is an amazing woman, and I am so very glad we had the opportunity to spend time together.

From Ernie Zuberbuehler - I am the personal trainer that has been working with Patricia Robbins. Patricia and I finished our last session yesterday and I wanted to email you with her overall progress. The most visibly noticeable change in Patricia is her confidence in the gym. Most people, including Patricia, are very intimidated when they begin working out in a fitness facility. That being said, a good measure of individual success is the frequency one actually engages in physical activity in the club setting. Patricia was religious, not only with our appointments but also getting to the gym on her time as she worked out roughly five days a week. Such dedication is the reason for how successful she has been and that success has undoubtedly resulted in her new-found confidence. This confidence is not without reason. First, she has experienced strength increases of roughly 40-60 percent for the major muscle groups focused on during or sessions (including a 300 pound leg press during our last session). In addition, her muscular endurance and cardiorespiratory conditioning has vastly improved. One of my primary goals was to get Patricia running and during the last week of training she completed a half-mile jog which truly is a milestone and an accomplishment that has empowered her beyond imagination. Every time she runs she just grins ear to ear and tells me she can't believe she is actually doing this. Patricia has also displayed wonderful improvement in balance and coordination. During our last couple of weeks together, Patricia began learning the fundamentals of boxing and I believe that was her favorite aspect of training. In closing, it has been my pleasure working with Patricia and I know she will continue to build upon the wonderful base she has created in the passing weeks.

Eye Center of Racine
Patricia was seen at The Eye Centers of Racine and Kenosha, by Dr Kanwar Singh MD for a comprehensive consultation. During this extensive exam, the only vision problem that Dr Singh found, was a minor need for reading glasses. She does not require any of the other surgical or cosmetic procedures that our office provides such as, LASIK vision correction, Blepharoplasty, Cataract removal, or Botox Injections at this time. Patricia will be returning to our office to work with our friendly opticians to pick out a frame that will compliment her new look. The Eye Centers of Racine and Kenosha is a multi-specialty opthalmic practice with three full-time M.D.s, and a full-time optometrist. The offices are at St. Mary's Medical Center, 3805B Spring Street Suite 140, Racine 53405, Telephone: (262) 637-0500 and Med Care West, 9916 75th Street Suite 101, Kenosha 53142, Telephone: (262) 658-1937.

Pamela Grant - Personal Insight Coach - "Hope Renewed"
I had my first session with Patricia. I explained to her that a life coach is like a "personal trainer" who supports you to face and conquer life challenges. Wellness coaching is about improving your immediate and future quality of life. The "Circle of Life" process empowers you to set positive life and health direction, then reach those goals. This coaching is ideal for persons who deal with high stress at home or work. It also works for persons facing life transitions in health, family care-giving with aging parents, relationships or career. It is a process that not only addresses your greatest challenges but also creates a path for moving forward in your life. It focuses on personal empowerment and Self Care. We discussed Patricia's ability to embrace the principles that she has inner potential for ,self-healing capacity, personal transformation, Self Care and self reliance, The Circle of Life process of coaching is based on an actual circular image, divided into 12 aspects of our lifes. Through the self inquiry process, all aspects within the circle are explored and rated to the persons satisfaction level or need to work on the area. These aspects are Nutrition, Exercise, Stress Mastery, Relaxation, Finances, Work, Play, Health Care, Empowerment, Life Purpose, Self Esteem and Spirituality. Patricia went home with home work to rate these areas. She will pick her top three areas that she will choose to work on in the next few weeks. She is a delight to work with. My goal as her coach is to guide her to advance on an upward spiral of vitality, health, joy, peace and the fullfillment of her goals.

The second session with Patricia was July 9, 2008. Patricia's homework for this week was to look at the twelve aspects of her life, Nutrition, Exercise, Stress Mastery, Relaxation, Finances, Work, Play, Health Care, Empowerment, Life Purpose, Self Esteem and Spirituality. It was obvious she took the time to do some self reflecting and was able to identify the top three areas that she has chosen to work on in the next few weeks. In this process a focus area is designated from the three areas by Patricia. Strengths and previous victories are identified. Focusing on her strengths and victories supports her remembrance of being capable, victorious and powerful. It is ones strengths that provide us confidence. In this process the power of intention is used. Intention comes from within us “having the mind focused on a specific purpose". Clarifying one's intention provides the motivation and energy to create the goals to your desired destination. Patricia is clear on what her intention is. We then set a goal for this week to work on this intention. She defined challenges and brainstormed possible action steps to meet these challenges during the week. Reflections from Patricia. She was surprised how strengths in one area of her life supported change in other areas. She enjoyed putting words to what she wants to create in her life. She was able to clearly see her many victories. She realized her victories maximize her ability to move forward and stay in the process of healing and creating the change she desires. The "Circle of Life" process empowers you to set positive life and health direction. In our next session we will explore this process more and I will show her how affirmations and visualization can be a powerful tool in completing this process.

Aspire Salon and Spa
Marianne Pelini, owner of Aspire Salon and Spa. Last week, Patricia Robbins, (the Racine Dream Team makeover recipient) came in to my salon for the hair and makeup portion of her makeover and I wanted to share with you the experience I had with her. First I want to say that I was very impressed by her courage to enter the contest for the makeover. I could tell by her conversation that she has really enjoyed this experience and has grown tremendously from it. She was eager for any changes and open to my suggestions for updating her look. She had very fine waist length, one length hair that had not had a real style in many years... I suggested she let me cut it shoulder length and give her a lot of long layers which will give her a lot more movement and fullness to her fine hair and also add some longer wispy bangs to frame her face and accentuate her beautiful blue eyes. I recommended that it would give her a more professional and sophisticated look. Her hair was rather brassy so I decided to color it a rich natural dark blonde for her base color and then give her a lot of lighter golden blonde high lights to warm up her pale skin tone. She loved it! I did her makeup with my cosmetic line “Sorme”. It is an incredible mineral line used by many of the top Hollywood makeup artists. I used a neutral powder base, to even out her complexion, and then used cool violet and pale creamy pink shades on her eyes. I lined them with a smoky grey to make the pop, and filled in her brows with a blonde brow shadow, I then used a berry pink blush on her cheeks, and finished her new look with a soft pink lip color called “Bliss”. She looked absolutely radiant. She is coming in to see me on Wednesday for a “Bioelements Flax-Vitamin C” facial which is a firming and tightening facial. It has been a pleasure working with Patty.(She is a true survivor) One of the greatest joys of my profession and my passion and is doing dramatic makeovers on a woman and watching her self esteem emerge and it was immediate with Patty...I have really enjoyed providing her with this transformation and being a part of The Racine Dream Team.
